JESSE RAUDALES:North Hollywood Based Artist is Breaking History as the 1st Minority Olympic Artist

Jesse Raudales, an Olympic artist based in North Hollywood is adding some color to the art world. Raudales is attracting attention with every art show and interview he does. It also helps to have friends like Tommy Ford and Miguel Nunez. His greatest masterpiece would be his son Jesse Junior. In his painting, “Peace for the Children of the World,” Raudales painted his son Jesse Jr. He later was selected as an official artist for the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Raudales amazing story didn’t start with the Winter 2006 Olympics. Pronounced dead on May 21, 1970, Raudales’ mother and grandmother prayed to God and his mother cradled her child in her arms. Raudales mother named him Jesus to honor god, and until age five the child wore burlap robes, leather sandals and long hair.
Jesus Guadeloupe Raudales won first place in a statewide art show in North Carolina at age seven. “It felt really good as a child just to know that your artwork was selected,” said Raudales.

The Olympics

In 2006 Raudales became the first minority chosen as an official artist for the Olympics, and at this point in his young career he considers the artwork selected for the 2006 Winter Olympics as his greatest achievement. “I’m re¬ally like a baby in the artwork. That’s our Oscar and that’s our Grammy, being selected as an Olympic artist. That is like the highest achievement you can receive as an artist,” added Raudales.
Raudales grandmother a black Cuban wouldn’t ac¬knowledge that she was African. A number of Raudales family members don’t recognize their African side of the family. Raudales accepts and embraces his black roots and says he’s proud of it. “Being the only minority artist in the Olympics and the only artist to have three painting simultaneous at the same time in one Olympics and being the youngest artist selected for the Olympics its bitter sweet,” said Raudales.

Jesse Jr.

Raudales son Jesse Jr. Is a major influence on the artist’s life. “When I found out I was having a child I thought my art career was over. But actually I just found out its just the be¬ginning by having him,” said Raudales.
The artist’s careers just started, and Jesse Jr. “inspires me because he is the love of my life,” Raudales said.

Speed Artist

Raudales considers him¬self a “speed artist.” Raudales explains that the average artists can take three weeks to a month or longer to finish a piece. It can take Raudales a day or a couple of hours to finish a piece depending if he uses oil or not. When he was studying Fashion Design and Commercial Arts at the Arts Institute in Atlanta, Georgia Raudales brought his assignments in the day after they were assigned. His professors would say “I wasn’t taking my time and I didn’t really focus on the lesson, but actually I was a speed artists and I just work off feelings,” said Rau¬dales.

On Michelangelo & Art In General

The only artist that Raudales really likes is Michelangelo but he says he really doesn’t like his work. “I just like him as an artist because he did everything that I do. He invented, he sculpted, he painted, worked with pastels, acrylics, oils all types of medium. So I guess I just respect him as an artist because he is a true artist,” said Raudales.
Raudales likes to paint everything and likes to tell a story. “I like to paint current affairs things that happened in my era. ….If somebody passes away and it touches me like Ray Charles, Corretta Scott King, it touched me, so I paint¬ed them. I just paint what’s happening in my era my time today like with the Katrina incident,” said Raudales.

In the Future

Raudales hopes to become a conglomerate in the future “I will be a self-made millionaire. Probably have a couple of art galleries, a graphics company teaching art some where in my galleries or just in facilities. Hopefully watching my son in college and seeing his career grow,” he said.
The artist recently signed with Zazzel so he is well on his way to becoming a self-made millionaire. “It is a great way for my fans and all art lovers to be able to get all of my paintings and design at an affordable price and within 24 hrs. It also allows people from other countries who can not come to one of my art shows to be able to buy my artwork. I am one of a few artist who Zazzel has signed, they mostly sign Actors or Singers and all A List Celebrities like Hanna Montana, the Black Eyed Peas etc... So it’s really good for both of us,” said Raudales.
Raudales hopes his son will run his businesses for him when he gets old enough. The artist is currently working on a couple of cartoon shows, so T.V. shows and animations are also in Raudales future. He is also scheduled for art shows in the UK.
As time passes Raudales future gets brighter and brighter and people are looking as he makes breaking history. Gallery owners and managers have told Raudales that he is “able to capture the younger generation which is very good for galleries because that is what they want to target.”
The artists fan base is 35 and under “that’s good because once an artist gets a fan base its last forever even when after the artist passes away the work becomes more famous so the fans make the work become famous,” added Raudales.
For young artists just breaking in to the field Raudales says, “keep pushing and pushing and pushing, stay focus, always put god first, don’t get discouraged. Its hard breaking into the art world but you have to stay determined and focused.”

The event which started Friday took place in the Tom Bradley Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center. Chinese New Year Parade Takes Place in Hollywood

On Saturday March 3rd the Chinese New Year's Goodwill parade started outside Mann's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. The event started around noon and ended at 2p.m. On Saturday 500 Beijing performers danced in the celebrations. The theme for the parade was the 2008 Olympics that will take place in Beijing. The Los Angeles municipal government along with Beijing sponsored the Chinese New Year parade Saturday. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa attended the parade last weekend. (Photos: Saharra J. NAACP host first live Image Awards at Shrine

The 38th annual NAACP Image Awards took place Friday March 2, 2007 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The two hour event was broadcasted live for the first time. LL Cool J a NAACP Image Award winner and a two time Grammy Award winner hosted the event. The event started with a performance by Leelah James and the Image Award Dancers.

Forest Whitaker's and Jennifer Hudson's Oscars have a new friend to keep them company. The two both received an NAACP Image Award at Friday's event.

Whitaker received an Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for his performance in "The Last King of Scotland." In his acceptance speech Whitaker noted that winning the award is one of his blessings and gifts he has received. "One of the most special gifts was being able to go back to Africa and touch my roots," said Whitaker.

American Idol's Randy Jackson and Smokie Robinson presented the first award of the program to Hudson. Hudson received an Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in "Dreamgirls." "You are the people that I have always admired and looked up to as beautiful black women. So it's an honor to be in the same category with you ladies," said Hudson to the other actresses nominated for the award. Hudson dedicated her award to Anika Noni Rose who was also nominated for the award. Rose was one of Hudson's colleagues in "Dreamgirls." Hudson also thanked Jackson for choosing her as a "wildflower," on American Idol.

Djimon Hounson won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for "Blood Diamond." The other actors nominated included Harry Belafonte for "Bobby," Danny Glover for "Dreamgirls," Eddie Murphy also for "Dreamgirls," and Jaden Christopher Syre Smith for "The Pursuit of Happyness."

During the award ceremonies the NAACP Special Awards were presented. The Special Awards includes the Hall of Fame Award, the Chairman's Award, and the President's Award. NAACP President and CEO Bruce Gordon along with actress Kerri Washington presented journalist Soledad O'Brien with the President's Award. The reason were presenting this award to her is because she asks the questions no one else will ask. She stays with the story when everyone else has moved on. She is not about the sound bite, she is about the truth," said Gordon.

O'Brien is the co-anchor for "American Morning" which airs on CNN. She was born to an Afro-Cuban mother and an Australian-Irish father. Her parents believed education was very important and sent all of their six children to Harvard. While at Harvard, O'Brien earned a degree in English and American literature.

O'Brien said "it is a privilege to cover the most important stories of our times and to be a voice for people that have no voice, shine a light on places that sometimes people would prefer to ignore, to ask the uncomfortable questions." O'Brien who conducted reports for CNN's coverage of Hurricane Katrina told audience members and viewers to "please do not forget about the people of New Orleans. Think about all those people there and everywhere. They have not recovered, they are not okay," said O'Brien.

During the award ceremonies two other NAACP Special Awards were also presented. The Special Awards includes the Hall of Fame Award, the Chairman's Award, and the President's Award. Actress Raven Simone from "That's So Raven," and Keke Palmer from "Akeelah and The Bee" presented William H. Cosby with the Hall of Fame Award.

Simone received two NAACP Image awards for Children's Program and Outstanding Performance in a Children's program. Palmer won and Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture. "If it wasn't for him I wouldn't be standing on this podium today. I really want to thank you for my shot. He believed in me," said Simone.

In 1965 Cosby a comedian, actor, activist, author, jazz aficionado and recording artist break came. Cosby took the role of Alexander Scott on "I Spy." Cosby was the first black actor to get a leading role on a primetime TV drama. When Cosby was giving his speech he told a story about a friend of his "Joe Black," which a majority of the audience members didn't understand and Cosby may have not understood what he said either.

Tyra Banks along with NAACP Chairman Julian Bonds presented Bono with the Chairman's Award. This award honors those in entertainment that are involved in social change. "We need the community that taught the world about civil rights to teach them something about human rights," said Bono.

In Africa 500 thousand people die each day from Aids. Bono noted that Aids is a big issue in America with the main victims of the deadly disease are African American women. Bono spoke about his One Campaign, which two million people have joined to help end poverty. "Where you live should not decided whether you live or whether you die," said Bono He also said that "we can be the generation that ends extreme poverty."

"Grey's Anatomy," received four NAACP Image Awards. The Show earned an Image award for Outstanding Drama Series. Shonda Rhimes, received an award for Writing in Drama Series for "Grey's Anatomy" "It's the End of the World." Actress Chandra Wilson won an Image award for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Isaiah Washington received an Image award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series. "Last time I was up here I felt deserving of something. This time I feel extraordinary privileged," said Washington.

Ugly Betty received three Image Awards. The series was honored as the Outstanding Comedy Series. Vanessa Williams received an Image Award for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Silvio Horta als received an award for the comedy writing of "Ugly Betty."

"Girlfriends," Tracee Ellis Ross received an Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a comedy series for her role as Joan Clayton. "I love my job, I love what I do. For the last seven years I couldn't think of a better place to grow up and become women," said Ross. The actress told the audience members that she was wearing her mommy's dress as she left the stage after receiving her award. Reggie Hayes also received an Image Ward for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in "Girlfriends."

Besides the opening performance by James, the audience and viewers of the Image Awards got to see many other performers. The Roots who received an award for Outstanding Duo or Group performed. India.Arie performed "I Am Not My Hair," which won the artist an Image award for Outstanding Music Song. Mary J. Blige did not perform at the event but received two Image Awards one for Outstanding Female Artist and the second for Music Video "Be Without You."

Wildog leader of the music group Ozomatli, discusses the future of the band. Ozomatli is currently busy working on their next record in the studio. Starting next month the band will be touring in the United States with Ziggy Marley and the Wailers.
The next cd released by the band will be bilingual. It will be featuring songs in English as well as Spanish. Over the years Ozomatli has changed members for many reasons. "Some have got married...some were in other bands and decided to stay with them. ...With such a big band it’s hard to keep everybody around...I feel good about the line up we have now," said Wildog.
The group has been involved with a number of humanitarian causes. Such as anti-war and occupation movements. The movements they have been apart of recently include the South Central Farmers, and proimmigration rights.
"...Music can be the fuel to youth movements," said Wildog.
Today music is impacting the youth around the world. Ozomatli is making a positive impact with their music.
When asked what he thinks about the immigration situation and how its being dealth with the Bush administration Wildog said "Personally I would rather pay for the health care and education for any human being illegal or not, than spend one cent on a bomb dropping in Iraq."
The group is extremely excited about their new album coming to stores soon.

Singing group Chapter 4 performed at the 2006 Harlem Summerstage on July 27th, 2006. Other performers included Leon and the People, Mighty Sparrow, among many others. The event took place at the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State office building plaza. Which is located at Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvd and 125th Street in Harlem, New York. The event started around 5p.m. and ended at 7:30. The group Chapter 4 Dante, Jason, Gavin and J.R. are signed under J Records. The groups CD will be available in stories October 10th. India Arie "Testimony: Vol.1, Life and Relationship."

India.Arie will definitely be receiving a Grammy or two for her album "Testimony: Vol.1, Life & Relationship." The CD was released by Motown Records in June. Arie's CD is filled with songs and poems about life and the relationships one has through life.

The single from the album "I am not my hair" featuring Akon was released in November of last year.

The single gave listeners and fans a look into who India.Arie is. For some it answered our questions into why Arie decided to cut her locks.

In the African American community one of the hot topics discussed is hair. Good hair, bad hair, nappy hair, black hair. This song speaks to what those of African decent deal with regarding their hair. In this song Arie explains that it matters who you are inside not what's on your head.

The tracks from "Testimony: Vol.1, Life & Relationship" are beautiful poems to the ear. Like the other albums released by the 30-year-old songwriter-singer, and guitar player this one is headed for success as well. What does the future hold for India.Arie? I see nothing but success, Aries "Acoustic Soul" debut in 2001 and her second CD "Voyage to India," as well as "Testimony: Vol. 1, Life & Relationship" have shown fan and listeners India.

I must admit the first time I listened to the India.Arie CD, I only listened to one song I am not my hair I loved the song when it came out as a single. The single is the reason why I went to target the first day the CD came out. I got the CD to listen to one song, so that's what I did.

The second week I decided to listen to "Testimony:Vol. 1, Life & Relationship," again but this time I would really listen to it. I listened to the whole CD from start to finish and couldn't get enough. I thought to myself why didn't I do this sooner.

The tracks all have a message that India.Arie is trying to convey with her music. Some of my favorite tracks are "I Am Not My Hair," "Private Party," "Better People," can I just pick all of them. I like the whole CD, again all of the songs have a positive messages.

Some songs make you want to just get up in dance like "Wings of Forgiveness," and "Better People." The track "I Choose" is about basically choosing what your going to do with your life. It's the song that gets you out of bed and gives a person hope that everything will be okay, cause everything is in your hands.

India.Arie's CD "Testimony: Vol.1, Life & Relationship," became a number one album when it released. The first solo female artist to have a number one album from Motown was Diana Ross with her album "Lady Sings the Blues." Ross's album received number one album 33 years ago, now India.Arie is making history with "Testimony: Vol.1, Life & Relationship." So go buy a piece of history.

Jazz Festival Goes On

The 37th annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival ended.
The six-day event included local musicians from New Orleans as well as others including Jimmy Buffett, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Paul Simon.
Organizers have not announced how many attended; the event usually brings out around five hundred thousand people.
The New Orleans Fair Ground Race Course is where the festival was hosted.
During the height of the flooding the Race Course was under five feet of water.
A number of musicians returned to New Orleans for the jazz festival, for some this is the first time they are returning since Hurricane Katrina.
Performer Fat Domino was a headliner for the jazz festival.
Domino did make an appearance at the festival, but he did not perform.
It was his first visit to New Orleans since Domino was rescued by boat when Katrina hit on August 29th.(Written for broadcast)

Those in the early stages of Alzheimer can choose between two free brochures that can assist them in planning for their future.
The brochures can also help them find resources accessible for them.
The brochures which were published by the Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association are available from the association as well as clinic’s and doctor’s offices.
The brochure titled “You Have Just Been Diagnosed With Memory Loss: You Are Not Alone,” directs patients to services and resources available from the Alzheimer’s Association.
The second brochure “Early Stage Memory Loss: Planning For the Future” include issues patients should deal with early on such as: legal and healthcare issues.
Some of these issues include selecting a trustee, looking at their healthcare benefits, and talking with an attorney versed in managing cases dealing with dementia.(Written for Broadcast)

New information has been released for arthritis sufferers.
According to researchers from U-C-L-A, patients that take an antacid with anti-inflammatory medication have less stomach problems.
The new study shows that by using an anti-inflammatory drug patients with an acid-reducing drug patients may have an increased effect than consuming a Cox-2 inhibitor alone to help protect an upset stomach.
According to the author of the study Doctor Brennan Spiegel, the drug combination may be the chosen cure for arthritis patients that are at high risk for stomach problems.
Upset stomach or Dyspepsia (dys-pep-sia) is one of the side effects of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.(Written for broadcast)

Today Pasadena City Council will meet to decide if a measure will be placed on the November ballot.
The measure is intended at attracting a National Football League to the Rose Bowl.
The N-F-L would have the right to play at the Rose Bowl for 25 years, in substitute of a five-hundred Million dollar stadium renovation.
Later on this month N-F-L owners could decide to endorse a Southland franchise.

L.A. Coliseum $8 Million Dollar Renovation

City officials will meet with the National Football League to present their plans for an 8 hundred Million dollar renovation of the L-A Coliseum.
The Coliseum which hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics has not hosted a professional team since the Raiders in 1994.
According to N-F-L Commissioner Paul Tagliabue the league is focusing on the Coliseum as an N-F-L franchise location.

Translating ads from English to Spanish doesn't serve the demographics, Baral said.

Taft High School in Woodland Hills has won its third national championship at the 25 th annual U-S Academic Decathlon.
The win is the fourth championship won in six years by a high school in the San Fernando Valley.
High school teams from the San Fernando Valley have won nine championships.
El Camino Real located in Woodland Hills has won four, Taft three and two from Moorpark.

50 Cent who has sold over millions of records as an artist is a judge and spokes-rapper for a cooking competition that is nationwide.
The competition is sponsored by Glaceau the same company that sells 50 Cent's Formula 50 a grape-flavored Vitamin Water beverage.
The rapper wasn't always physically fit, 50 said it's harder for kids to have a healthy diet.
Student chefs will receive a $100,000 scholarship for creating a cafeteria lunch recipe that is the most "nutrient-rich."

7th Annual African American Music Festival

The African American Music Association (A2MA) at California State University of Northridge ended its 7th annual African American Music Festival Saturday April 1st, 2006. The week long event started on Monday March 27th.
The advisor for A2MA professor Deborakh Broadous stated this year’s theme was “Remembering the Bridge that Brought Us Over.”
The sponsors of the week long event included the African American Music Association, Associated Students, Black Student Union, California Black Family Institute, the Pan-African Studies Department, University Student Union, University Program Council, Supervisor Mike Autonivich, Zev Yaroslasky, Senator Richard Alacorn, and Target.
The festival is a combination of activities. It included workshops for elementary, middle school, high school, and college students. There were also panel discussions, concert series and writer workshops.
The festival featured workshops on a variety of music. Such as African Music, Negro spirituals, jazz, blues, gospel music, and classical music.
High school students from Compton high school and students from CSUN had the opportunity to listen to John Davis conductor, musician, and writer play the saxophone. Davis is the Chair of the Performing Arts Department at Gardena High School. Davis released an album entitled “John Davis Quintet”. Davis is also the founder and director of the Watts Community Band.
Students who attended the festival were able to be critiqued by Barbara Sherrill, Henrietta Davis, Oscar Williams and Rodney Posey of Crystal Rose Records among others. Between the four experts students were able to get some insight on how to improve their crafts.
Middle school students learned about jazz and blues from CSUN professor Kambon Obayani, who is a writer and teacher of English, writing, literature, and music. Students also engaged in workshops with Posey and Williams. A praise dance performance was performed by dancers from Calvary Baptist.
The festival activities included a panel discussion on “Today’s Black Music: The Biz, Sounds, and Images of Hip-Hop and R&B Music” which was moderated by senior Pan-African Studies student Alexandria Barabin.
The panelist included CSUN student Patrice Ferguson, the lead emcee for Fresh Air Khalil Ekulona, Ahmad Rashad, Jr of Ja Ja productions a hip hop band wit a jazz influence, attorney, author, CPA, and professor Shannon Nash and Andre Johnson of Magic Johnson Enterprises.
The first question panelist discussed was the difference between the record deal and the distribution deal. Nash stated that artist should educate themselves on the differences. “Don’t sign anything you don’t understand and don’t be to cheap to hire a lawyer,” Nash said.
Ekulona said artist need to ask themselves why their doing this. “Are you doing it because you love music, or are you doing it for the Bentleys, the money? Ask yourself this question.” Ekulona said.
When artist distribute their work individually they have an opportunity to develop their craft at home before they present to anyone stated Rashad, Jr.
Patrice Ferguson a contributor of “Hip-Hop Think Tank” a student research journal stated when the students worked on the journal they looked at the different issues of “how we love and support hip-hop but also deal with the other.” Ferguson called hip-hop audio porn.
Ferguson stated “you come to a point when you learn so much you start to question some of the things you love.”
The panelists agreed that songwriting is important. “In my opinion songwriting is the most beneficial in the industry,” said Johnson.
Johnson stated that if an artist wants a check year long, they should song write. Rashid Jr. said “it all goes down to the fundamentals.”
Rashid said artists should be able to write their ideas down on paper and pass them on to the next person. Rashid stated artist need to “stay hard on writing on that craft.”
Ekulona was raised in a home that played music. “I came up in the golden age of hip-hop” said Ekulona.
Ekulona stated “back then hip-hop was a very different thing…now hip-hop is pimping, blinging, and balling.
“I try to be well rounded in music,” said Ekulona. Johnson stated some of his favorites are Earth, Wind and Fire, Chaka Khan, Green Day, Blink 182, Hip-Hop, R&B, Musiq Soulchild, Tribe Called Quest, Busta, etc.
“I love John Coltrane, “Johnson said.
Rashid Jr. said “all the music in the world inspires me.” Rashid also stated that “as a young person you love music. Music is the universal language.”
Ekulona told the students to “understand the power of hip-hop and the influences hip-hop can have on your life.” Encouraging students to know it’s not real. “When you hear this stuff and enjoy it but know that it’s not real, it’s not the truth,” stated Ekulona.
Ekulona thinks the message hip-hop is given black males is “….I am a slave.”
“The new form of slavery is up here [in your mind]…jails are being made to lock you up.”
Johnson told the students they have options. “You don’t have to sell drugs, kill people and degrade your people,” said Johnson.
Johnson let the young girls know that they can be more then a video girl. “You don’t have to be a video girl you can be somebody behind the scenes a producer, or songwriter,” said Johnson.
The panelist encouraged the students to be young, and surround themselves with positive people. The 7th annual African American Music Festival ended with a concert and reception at Calvary Baptist Church on Saturday April 1, 2006.

According to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center only 40 percent of Americans believe they are fat.
More then 60 percent of the United States population is overweight, and half is obese according to government statistics.
Over two-thousand adults took part in the survey.
The adults were asked how much they weigh and how tall they are.
Doctors use body mass index a ration of height to weight to find out if someone is overweight or obese.
Those surveyed underestimated how much they weigh and overestimate how tall they are, not realizing they are overweight.
The study found that individuals have stopped dieting to help control their weight.

Car registration expenses can be used on tax returns as a tax deductible.
Customers can calculate the fees they paid for their vehicle registration by going to the California Department of Motor Vehicles website at www.dmv.ca.gov.
Information is available from 2004 and 2005; customers just need their license plate number and the last four digits of the Vehicle Information Number.
D-M-V Chief Deputy Director Ken Miyao said that the paper trial will be cut for tax payers.

1.7 Million Grant for Cancer Center

U-C-L-A’s Jonsson Cancer Center received a five year, one-point seven Million dollar grant to create a new cancer survivor center.
The grant was received from The Lance Armstrong Foundation named after cancer survivor and cyclist Lance Armstrong.
Jonsson Center is one of the five centers in the nation named LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center of Excellence.
Dr. Patricia Ganz, will head the Jonsson Cancer Center Survivorship Program, which will help survivors shift into disease free lives.
The center was chosen by the Armstrong Center as the fifth member of the nationwide network.

Students not allowed to use restroom

According to the Los Angeles Times students at Worthington Elementary School were banned from using the restroom.
The Times reported that instead students had to use buckets behind the teacher’s desk or those placed in classroom corners.
Parents plan on attending a school board meeting next week according to the Times.
The principal at the Inglewood elementary school imposed a lockdown due to immigration legislation.
On March 27 almost 40,000 middle and high school students staged walkouts throughout southern California.
The Times reported that Principal Angie Marquez misread the handbook for the school district.
The restraining lockdown used by Marquez is reserved to be used during nuclear attacks reports the Times.
It was an “honest mistake” said director of operations for the Inglewood Unified School District, Tim Brown.
Brown confirmed that students had to use the buckets placed in the classrooms.
According to Brown, Marquez “followed procedure. She made a decision to follow the handbook. She just misread it.”
The district plans on updating its emergency preparedness instructions to help principals and teachers deal with student walkouts and other situations Brown told the Times.
